The Lost World of Indigirka
Some places on Earth have beautiful nature and a unique aura. Once having visited them, you would like to return there again and again.
In these places, a person draws strength from nature, fully restoring their body, and in reconnecting with nature, a person finds inner peace. One of those places for me is our mysterious “Lost World”, hidden among the high mountains of the Porozhny Ridge in the mountainous land of Chersky...
In 2010, during a rafting trip along the route from Ust-Nera settlement to Khonuu, on the advice of a famous traveler and photographer Alexander Dersu, we were fortunate to visit this World. It was a strong team of 19 athletic tourists from Yakutia and the Chezh Republic.
The Kuellekh-Mustakh River means ‘a river with lakes and ice’. I would also add the word ‘күрүлгэннээх’ – with waterfalls: Kuellekh-Mustakh- Kyrylgennekh. The peculiarity of the river is that it starts with a series of lakes and glaciers connected by hundred-meter high waterfalls.
With the beauty of ridged mountains formed from solid granite massifs, sheltering in their embrace the thickness of glaciers, the glorious WORLD will appear in front of you, which is comparable to the beauty of the Alpine mountains.
It turned out, not only tourists, but also hunters rarely come to these places. As I came to know, only our Dersu had been there before us. Having arrived from Kuellekh-Mustakh, he revealed this World in his photos and made a sensation among photographers and travelers. It is inconvenient for hunters to carry hunting trophies because of its high passes and, therefore, locals come here very rarely.
Do you remember Obruchev's book “Sannikov Land” or have you seen the movie? An expedition of polar explorers, having climbed a high mountain, descends deep into the hollow and discovers a mysterious world with amazingly beautiful nature.
And so is our Lost World: it is not easy to get here, but the reward for the hard way is worthy of the traveler!
