The Amga River Cave Paintings

The Amga River Cave Paintings
Along the route from the village of Verkhnyaya Amga to the village of Onnes along the Amga River, we discovered rock paintings in five locations during our tours.
Many of the paintings are made with red ochre, which, having been well absorbed into the rock, has conveyed information sent by our ancestors thousands of years ago.

The skill of the primitive artists is magnificent and astonishing. The technique of executing the paintings is also impressive - the drawings were made only on hard material, meaning they would last for centuries and millennia.

The life and activities of ancient people largely depended on successful hunting of wild beasts and animals. In the understanding of ancient people, animals possessed supernatural power and exceptional might. They dominated the surrounding world and could provide well-being and fortune to humans.

The main object of the animal hunting cult was the beautiful moose of the taiga, that is why it is most frequently found in the oldest petroglyphs.

Ancient artists skillfully conveyed not only the general appearance of the massive figure of the animal but also its proportions and characteristic pose.
