Kysyl Elesin Tukulan (Red Sands Dune)
Kysyl Elasin is a tall dune situated atop a sandy mountain. The Tukulan (sand dune) is about forty meters high and stretches along the shore for more than a kilometer.
The word тукулан is of Evenki origin meaning ‘sands’.
The Kysyl Elasin Tukulan is located on the right bank of the Lena River, opposite the village of Bulgunyakhtakh. It is part of the Lena Pillars Nature Park.
The Tukulan is a long sandy dune, 40 m high and 1,500 m long, extending along the riverbank.
“Millions of tons of sand from the tukulan, lifted from below by the force of the wind, push the dune deeper into the taiga, consuming all living things in its path. After many hundreds of years, the desiccated remains of trees emerge from beneath the sand.”
