Chuchuna

Chuchuna
“Do you see the two peaks here that look like camel humps? That’s where the snowman - Chuchuna (Yeti) - must live!” - Vladimir Khabarov, a resident of the Tebyulyakh settlement, told us as we were reaching the starting point of the hiking part of the trip.
Our three-day water trip along the Indigirka River had come to its end and we were going to the mountains tomorrow!

I have known about the Yeti inhabiting these places for a long time and have heard various stories about them. Let me share two cases that happened in the recent past:
Case One

G.K. Starkov, a worker of the Moma state farm, was watching with binoculars the creature (over three meters tall) which was making 3-4 meters long jumps. The footprints on the sand testified, according to Gavriil Konstantinovich, to a certain clubfoot of the Yeti, and the depth of the footprint was greater than ordinary man’s footprints.

“I was looking through binoculars at the riverside,” recalled Starkov, “when I saw a large dark spot. It was moving through the bushes, and it was unclear what kind of animal was walking so confidently along the shore. At first I thought it was a bear, then I thought it was an elk. Then I almost lost my mind!”

The bushes, through which someone was wading, ended, and Gavril was stunned. He saw with his own eyes a huge, shaggy creature, clearly resembling a man.

The shaggy giant soon disappeared into the forest without noticing the dazed hunter. The dog, which had just huddled helplessly at the man’s feet and had not even whimpered, suddenly rushed after the giant.

“Why my dog rushed after this ‘miracle’, I don’t know,” - said Gavril Starkov, “But suddenly I heard it barking closer and closer. He flew out and came at me, spinning around and trying to bite me. It was so vicious! I barely fought it off, I even wanted to shoot it.”

The dog, which the hunter had taken in as a small puppy, raised in taiga for several years, learned to hunt, was ready to claw his owner’s throat. He had to fight off the furious dog with everything that came to hand at that moment. Suddenly the dog calmed down and, as if instantly forgetting that he had just tried to tear up his owner, wagging his tail, calmly ran away and lay down by the fire.

This case took place in the 70s of the last century. An expedition arrived urgently fr om Khonuu to measure the footprints of the Yeti...The place of meeting with the Yeti was only 3 km away from the place wh ere we started our way to the mountains.

We did not see the Yeti on that trip, although we passed under those humps, which Vladimir showed us. Nevertheless, the hope that He exists in this Lost World and we can meet Him someday does not leave till now:)

Case Two

“...I can even later tell a real story from my geological past from in these places...

The Institute of Geology carried out survey work in that area in the 90s. Teams traveled to the upper reaches of the Moma River on heavy all-terrain vehicles from the Artyk settlement. One of such teams of 4 people with this vehicle worked along a small stream near the pass. In the morning the brigade of 3 people left for the route leaving a young trainee in the camp and one pregnant dog with him. The dog, by the way, was one of the most hunted for big game. Its puppies were very highly valued here.

The guy noticed a man in fur clothing with a backpack and a dog (as he said) on the other side of the creek around 4 p.m., and thinking it was a reindeer herder, started calling him. The man did not answer and just stood there. The trainee went to get his glasses (his vision was minus two) and only then he could fully see the creature. It was a furry human-like creature standing on two legs with a hump on its back and a lynx sitting near it. The guy went into a complete daze. He grabbed his gun, climbed into the tent and sat there until the brigade arrived. The brigade immediately left the place after seeing his shock and hearing his explanations.

This guy was from the mainland, and had never heard any stories about the Yeti before. If it could be supposed that he mistook a bear (they are always plentiful there) for this creature, what struck everyone there most of all was the behavior of that pregnant hunting dog, who many times hunted bears, and when the brigade came she was found in an almost unconscious state.

Eyewitnesses to this story are still alive today and can confirm the story.
